Facts on Olympics

1. The Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, a Latin expression meaning “Faster, Higher, Stronger”. It was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894 (written by the Dominican priest Henri Didon) and has been official since 1924.

2. The Olympic Games consist of 35 sports, 30 disciplines and 408 events.

3. Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland are the only countries to be represented at every Olympic Games since their inception in 1896.

4. For a South American country, the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were the first Olympics. The Olympics have never been conducted in Africa.

5. The United States has hosted the maximum number of Olympic Games – eight (four Summer and four Winter). Also, London hosted three Olympic Games (Summer), more than any other city.

6. The Olympic rings are five intertwined rings representing the unity of the five continents (Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe). The colours are : blue, yellow, black, green, and red, over a white field. These colors are chosen because every nation had at least one of them on its national flag.

7. Although there were calls to boycott the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China over human-rights record and Tibet issue, no nation finally boycotted the games.

8. Terrorism affected the Munich (Germany) Olympic Games, 1972, when eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage by a Palestinian group (Black September). Two athletes were killed, and nine others were killed during a failed liberation attempt.

9. The maximum medal winners at Olympics have been –
(1) Michael Phelps, US – Swimming – 28 medals (23 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze), 
(2) Larisa Latynina, USSR – Gymnastics – 18 (9 + 5 + 4),
(3) Paavo Nurmi, Finland – Athletics – 12 (9 + 3 + 0).

10. The Olympic Movement consists of international sports federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and organising committees for each specific Olympic Games.The governing  ody is the IOC (International Olympics Committee), responsible for choosing the host city for each Games
